Shark fin soup is a Chinese delicacy typically served at events such as wedding banquets. Due to increased demand in recent years, shark populations have been decimated. Fishermen remove only the fin and throw the shark back into the water to die. Every year, tens of millions are caught, and currently 20 species are considered endangered.
Sharks are an important part of the marine ecosystem. As an ‘apex’ predator they help maintain stability and order in the ocean. Their presence affects all other marine organisms, large and small, from increasing ray populations to declining shellfish available and reduced water quality for humans.
Shark fin soup kills more than just sharks.
